Thompson spent twenty-three years in industrial research (funded by Texas Instrument, DARPA and others) followed by eleven years in academic research at the University of Arkansas where he served as the Charles Morgan Acxiom Graduate Research Chair in Database.  During his career, he played a significant role in the development and widespread adoption of service oriented architectures (SOAs).  He served as on the editorial board of IEEE Internet Computing and also as an expert witness on several high profile patent infringement cases.  He led an effort to develop a strategic plan for the College of Engineering.  He is an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to artificial intelligence, database, and middleware, and is a member of the Arkansas Academy of Computing.
