The Computer Science department was officially established in December 1984 in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program began in 1976 and was offered through the Math Department.

The Computer Engineering department was officially established in 1985. The Bachelor of Science program in Computer Systems Engineering began in 1977 and was offered through the Industrial Engineering department.

The two departments merged in 1999, maintaining the two Bachelor of Science programs and the Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science.  Both programs offer Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.
